In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, a negative prognostic factor is tumor hypoxia, associated with radio/chemoresistance and poor outcomes, while a positive HPV status often shows improved responses to treatment and enhanced survival. This study aimed to assess hypoxia-induced endogenous markers' expression and potential prognostic significance in SNSCC patients undergoing treatment, correlating them with HPV status. A retrospective analysis was performed on patients with skin squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) who underwent curative treatment at this single institution. Following immunohistochemical staining, scoring, and correlation with overall survival (OS) and locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRRFS), the protein expression of CA-IX, GLUT-1, VEGF, VEGF-R1, and HIF-1 was established. HPV status evaluation was linked to markers of hypoxic conditions. Based on the findings, 40 patients were selected for further study. The analysis revealed that CA-IX expression was detected in 30% of cases, GLUT-1 in 325%, VEGF in 50%, and VEGF-R1 in 375%.
